Rain Forest Adventure Fishing 5 Days/ tambopata reserve

Welcome to Puerto Maldonado – The Capital of Global Biodiversity.

Day 1 -

Reception at the airport or bus station and transfer to the Carlos Expeditions Office for registration.
Transfer to the port on the Madre de Dios River from where we embark for an hour’s trip to our Lodge.
At the welcome reception you will be served a delicious exotic fruit juice and receive the keys to your room. After settling in and a short rest you will be introduced to the tropical rainforest during a stroll conducted by experienced local guides, who will lead you by jungle pathways where you will see the wonderful jungle flora and gigantic trees, some of which are more than 500 years old. The fauna of this fascinating world, tucans, parrots, monkeys, snakes, butterflies and insects of many kinds, will begin to reveal itself as you begin the adventure which will provide the opportunity to experience the magic of the rainforest in this protected and untouched tract of the virgin rainforest situated by the Tambopata National Park, a protected area of 278,000 hectares.

In the evening we embark on a river trip and caiman search. These enormous creatures, some of whom measure 3 metres long, are revealed by the light of lanterns lazing on the sand banks along the river side. The capybara, the largest rodent in the world at 60kg, also makes its home here and is best seen at night, its gleaming eyes will be visible from our boat as we silently cruise by. Return to the lodge for supper and bed.

Day 2 -

Rise and shine early, 5.30am, we make our way along the path that leads to the canopy, several platforms constructed high in the trees 40m above the ground which permit us a bird’s eye view of the treetop level of the forest. A great variety of bird species can be observed from here, tucans, parrots, eagles and trogones, oropendolas(?).
After a hearty breakfast we embark for the river crossing to the island opposite the lodge, “Monkey Island”, so named after the many different species of monkey that have colonized the island. We will be able to visit and observe these animals from the many winding pathways that criss-cross the island and treat them to a banana or two!
From the island we will leave directly for the Tambopata National Park entrance, situated along the river a short boat trip from the island. A path through the fertile, tropical jungle will lead us 5km through the dense growth to Sandoval Lake, a breathtakingly beautiful expanse of sweet and warm water which is home to many kinds of fish including the piranha, and attracts an amazing variety of wildlife to its shores. After a picnic of local and exotic foods on the beach we will set out in rowing boats for an almost silent and very magical trip on the lake giving us the opportunity to appreciate a large variety of birds and monkeys. A large family of giant river otters, measuring up to 2m in length, a species which is danger of extinction, and large caimans, up to 5m in length also live in the lake and with luck we will see them.

Day 3 –

Rainforest Adventure
After the calm of Lake Sandoval the activities planned for today will start the juices flowing and bring an adrenalin rush! Breakfast is followed by a walk of an hour and a half through the virgin rainforest observing birds, snakes, monkeys and butterflies to a small waterway, a meandering tributary to the Madre de Dios River, where we will fish for piranha. Return to the lodge, lunch and short siesta will prepare us for the afternoon’s challenges among the treetops at 30m above the jungle floor. After a short orientation session with the guide on how to use all the harnesses and security equipment which ensure our safety whilst using the adventure circuit, we take to the air following the example of the birds we have seen, a zip line, a flying fox and various rope bridges and ladders form a treetop circuit between earth and sky in the virgin rainforest where the potent mix adrenalin and joy will lift us out of ourselves in a way never felt before!
An evening walk amidst the nocturnal symphony of the jungle will calm us before supper and bed as well as giving us the opportunity to catch glimpses of the musicians, insects of all kinds, frogs, toads and night birds.

Day 4 –

A dawn walk along a winding pathway leads us to a feeding area for parrots, who congregate in large groups to chatter and cry loudly as they feed on decomposing palm trees which provide them with some of the same essential nutrients found in the more common clay licks.
After breakfast at the lodge we embark on a river trip to an animal research and rescue centre where wild animals are healed before being released in their natural habitat. The animals kept here include a variety of birds, monkeys, tapirs, jaguars and pumas. Lunch is served at the centre before setting off for the return trip to the lodge, where an afternoon of kayaking is planned. We row along the river and cross and circumnavigate Monkey Island, riding the lazy currents of the Madre de Dios River as they make their inevitable journey to the Amazon. A nocturnal walk again affords us the opportunity to record the sounds of the jungle in our hearts on our last night in this magical environment.

Day 5 –

Breakfast and an early start for the local market in the town of Puerto Maldonado, chock a block with exotic sights, sounds and smells, fresh local tropical fruits are displayed alongside tubers, flours, beans and spices.
